Pashmina is the fabric, not just a style — fine cashmere wool, hand-spun and hand-woven, prized for being warm without any bulk. That’s the whole appeal: a good pashmina shawl feels almost weightless in your hand but keeps you warm through a winter wedding evening. In Pakistan, pashmina has become the go-to fabric for bridal and formal shawls because it takes embroidery beautifully and drapes better than heavier wool.

What Is a Pashmina Shawl, Exactly?

Pashmina comes from the fine undercoat of Himalayan mountain goats, spun into yarn and hand-woven into fabric — a process that’s still done largely by hand in Kashmir. That’s what gives it its two defining qualities: it’s extremely light for how warm it is, and it takes hand embroidery (Sozni), weaving patterns (Kani), or heavier bridal work (Jamawar) exceptionally well because the base fabric is so fine. A pashmina shawl can carry any of these three embroidery styles — the “pashmina” label refers to the fabric underneath, not the pattern on top.
